about international business

International Business is an interdisciplinary major focusing on the convergence of peoples, cultures, and markets in what is now the a global world

Students majoring in International Business at Saunders College of Business, learn how to serve customers in international markets. They also learn how to take a local business global. Immersion in another nation's culture, values, and business practices is the key to international business success. Students gain an understanding of how people in other countries live and develop business strategies that meet the needs and wants of customers. Specific courses may include topics in strategic planning, marketing, government relations, and policy analysis.

A successful product in one country does not guarantee success in another. At Saunders College, we teach our students what it really means to have a global business. We stress the values of diversity and understanding – students graduate with the ability to take a problem and solve it while factoring in variables such as language, customs and government policy.

This program is designed to challenge students with unique problems and situations. It is the only program within Saunders College to require a co-major. The purpose behind the co-major it to allow students to focus on a specific area of business within the realm of international business. All students must also complete a cooperative education experience that can include studying or working abroad. Students who wish to increase their understanding of global markets and various regions of the world should strongly consider studying international business. The world's economy is increasingly global. Studying international business will provide you with insights into the global economic and business climates. Additionally, many institutions strongly advise (or require) students who major or minor in international business to study a foreign language and/or to complete an overseas study or internship experience. Taken together, such a course of study can be particularly relevant for students who hope to one-day work abroad.

To repeat, the world’s economy is increasingly global. As a result, demand continues to grow for individuals who understand the global context of business: from the logistics of international trade and cross-border investments to the cultural and ethical issues that are imbued in the practice of business around the world. By studying international business, you will learn about world cultures and societies, and be challenged to approach issues from different perspectives. These skills are increasingly valuable to employers faced with the challenge of opening and integrating multiple markets and gaining cohesion and collegiality in increasingly diverse workforces.
