Sociolinguistics was the first frontier science to emerge in the United States in the 1960s. It mainly refers to a discipline that studies the social nature and differences of language from the perspective of different social sciences by applying the theories and methods of linguistics, sociology and other disciplines.
There's a different understanding of this definition. Some scholars believe that this study should focus on language and study language variation by connecting the effects of social factors. Some scholars believe that it is the sociology of language, which studies various relations between language and society, USES linguistic materials to describe and explain social behaviors, and regards language as a social phenomenon.
