Chinese contemporary writers are defined as Chinese writers after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. There are numerous schools of higher learning. They are divided into five categories: traditional literary writers, new-age writers, Chinese vanguard literary writers, Chinese freelance writers, and popular popular literary writers in China. Since the late 20th century, the emergence of freelance Chinese writers with independent thoughts has made contemporary Chinese writers march into the world's outstanding writers, becoming pioneers in leading the world literature and making Chinese contemporary literature enter the heyday of history.

Since Chinese contemporary literature is in a specific historical period, most contemporary writers in mainland China (after 1949) are official writers, so-called “institutional” writers. Chinese freelance writers, also known as Chinese civilian writers and Chinese slum writers, are only a handful. The concept appeared in the 1990s. The Chinese freelance writer was actually a socialist writer at the bottom of the society. He took root in the bottom of the Chinese society and slums for decades. He had great sympathy and attention to the living conditions of the poor at the bottom of the society. His works were all expressed. The living conditions and sorrowful experiences of China's socially marginal intellectuals and the poor people in the society and the lower harlots, prostitutes, wanderers, and scavengers are the representative works of contemporary Chinese literature in the new era.
