Program Description

Students enrolled in either an M.A. or M.S. degree program in statistics learn about advanced strategies for collecting, analyzing and presenting data. Programs can be offered with thesis and non-thesis options.

M.A. and M.S. degree programs in statistics explore how concepts such as probability theory and regression analysis can be applied to real-world problems. Many programs require students to demonstrate their skills at the end of the program by requiring a thesis.

Because statistics is a wide branch of mathematics, students can often choose to specialize in areas such as linear models, statistical genetics and bioinformatics. Students must have completed at least a bachelor's degree in mathematics or a similar field before applying. Some programs may have more specific entrance requirements, such as the completion of undergraduate coursework in linear algebra, calculus or basic stats.

In a master's degree program, students may be required to take courses in a core curriculum, as well as a set of elective courses that could result in specializing in a particular area of the field. Students study probability, research and applied statistical methods. Common courses in statistics include:

  • Intermediate mathematical statistics

  • Research for statistics

  • Statistical computations and analysis

  • Methods in multivariate analysis

  • Biostatistics and data analysis
