Information Technology (IT) is the application of computers to store, study, retrieve, transmit, and manipulate data, or information, often in the context of a business or other enterprise. IT is considered a subset of information and communications technology (ICT). Information technology (IT) is the use of any computers, storage, networking and other physical devices, infrastructure and processes to create, process, store, secure and exchange all forms of electronic data.

Information Technology includes several layers of physical equipment (hardware), virtualization and management or automation tools, operating systems and applications (software) used to perform essential functions. User devices, peripherals and software, such as laptops, smartphones or even recording equipment, can be included in the IT domain. IT can also refer to the architectures, methodologies and regulations governing the use and storage of data.

This course has been especially designed to target audiences from multiple disciplines. Students will gain literacy in the underlying principles and vocabulary of Information Technology. The course has three objectives:

  • To explain mathematical principles underlying multimedia information technologies,

  • To provide questions about the social, economic, and political contexts in which IT exists

  • To introduce cutting edge technologies and trends such as those in the areas of wireless multimedia, computer security, digital audio, and high performance computing.
