The Discipline of German Language and Literature at the School of Foreign Languages and Cultures was set up in 2008, when it embraced its first session of undergraduates (oriented to German and English) in autumn. Thanks to a faculty with high academic degree, rich teaching experience and impressive capability in science research, the discipline enjoys distinguished teaching achievements: Undergraduates of this discipline are doing great in PGG-4 and PGG-8, with their grades and passing rate high on the list of China’s universities and colleges. The discipline also maintains close connections with many German universities, to which it assigns certain undergraduates with fine qualities and scholar every year as an exchange program, furthering its concept of internationalizing education. In the world of deepening economic globalization, the discipline actively promoted reform and has adopted a five-year undergraduate (bi-foreign languages) program, aiming to open a new pattern for ‘Fine Cultivation for Applicable Talents’

English is a major component of the discipline of English Language and Literature at the School of Foreign Languages and Cultures. It was approved as a Key University Discipline by the Education Committee of Jiangsu Province in 1990; it became a Key Subject of Jiangsu Provincial Government in 1994; its English Language and Culture Project, supported by the National 211 Project, was initiated in 1996; it became a Brand Discipline of Jiangsu Province in 2006. Currently, it is supported by a Primary Discipline Ph.D. Program, a Primary Discipline MA Program, a Priority Discipline of Jiangsu Province, and a Brand Provincial Discipline. This major has remarkable achievements in teaching, topping the list of TEM4 and TEM8 pass rates of normal universities in China for many years. Against the background of continuous deepening of economic globalization, this major carries out active reform and has formed the five-year bilingual cultivation mode of English plus one second foreign language such as French, German, Spanish, Japanese, etc., striving to usher in a new pattern of “Elite Cultivation of Applied Talents”.
