On May 4, 2017, CPPCC Hunan Provincial Committee Chairwoman Li Weiwei visited HNU’s booth at the Exposition Internationale in the Paris expo Porte de Versailles. She appraised HNU’s efforts in innovatively using designs to promote targeted poverty alleviation.

HNU’s booth is in the “Riches of the world” area. Most exhibits are from the “New Tongdao” design and social innovation, and “Huayao Hua” cultural creation projects initiated by the School of Design. A number of “乡home” themed products were displayed, including folk handicrafts, embroideries, household articles, agricultural products, cultural and creative products, and books. “Suo Shuo” brand handmade scarfs and handbags co-produced by modern designers and handicraftsmen, and 3D-printed products combining with bamboo-weaving techniques, were among the exhibits. There were also Hunan featured handicrafts, such as Dong brocade, cross-stitch, paper-cutting, embroidered patchwork, and curium porcelain, and the academy cultural product of Yuelu Academy.

The “乡home” project is a cultural creation and public benefit platform derived from the “New Tongdao” design and social innovation project. It has developed hundreds of real and visual products designed by designers across the world over the past eight years. It aims to establish an international innovative design alliance, and an internet-based information platform, to attract local people’s participation, and enhance their cultural innovation.
