Hubei University of Technology


Hubei University of Technology was originally established in 1952. In 1984, Hubei Institute of Light Industry merged with Hubei Academy of Agricultural Machinery to form Hubei Polytechnic University, and was renamed as Hubei University of Technology (HBUT) in 2004. HBUT is a key development university of Hubei Province. It was assessed by the Party Committee and the Provincial Government of Hubei Province as a high level, standard-setting, backbone university of the province’s higher education system. In 1986, HBUT earned the qualification to confer Master’s degrees. In 2014, it attained Tier 1 university status. In 2012 and 2016, it successively entered membership of the National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Central China Higher Educational Institutions.

HBUT covers an area of more than 1.06 square kilometers, with a building area of nearly 900,000 square meters. HBUT has fully fledged supporting facilities and infrastructure for teaching, scientific research, and public services. It has established 16 schools and 1 affiliated college. HBUT enrolls students from a total number of 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities throughout China, and has an enrollment of more than 20,000 full-time students of all types, including over 2,200 postgraduates.  

HBUT currently has more than 1,200 full-time faculty members, of whom over 570 are professors and associate professors, over 550 are doctoral supervisors and master’s supervisors. HBUT has recruited 22 national elites, and more than 130 provincial experts specializing in various fields. Among them, 3 are under the National Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 2 are honorary professors in the Cheung Kong Scholars Program initiated by the Ministry of Education, 1 is a winner of the National Science Grants for Outstanding Young Scientists, 1 is a winner of the National Science Grants for Excellent Young Scientists, 2 are included in the National Special-support Program for Domestic Experts, 2 are included in the National Expert Training and Expert Pool Program, 1 enjoys the title of National Outstanding Professional and Technical Elite, 2 enjoy the title of Young and Middle-aged Leading Professional for Scientific Innovation by the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 is included in the Promotion Program for Innovative Professionals by the Ministry of Science and Technology, 2 experts enjoy special grants from the State Council, 4 are senior foreign experts, 3 are National Role Model (Excellent) faculty members. The faculty also includes 23 experts under the Hubei Provincial Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 74 Chutian Scholars, 4 with the title of Reputable Teacher in Hubei, and 1 Chutian Mentor Award winner. Additionally, HBUT has recruited more than 50 full-time foreign language and academic teachers, 200 influential scholars as part-time professors from renowned domestic and overseas universities, scientific research institutes, and large-scale enterprises and public institutions.

HBUT is a multidisciplinary university with engineering as a major specialty, covering eight disciplines such as Engineering, Literature, Sciences, Art, Economics, Management, Law, and Education. HBUT now has 62 undergraduate programs, of which 4 are featured nationally for innovative content, 3 are selected programs of the “Excellent Engineer Scheme” of the Ministry of Education, 7 are comprehensive pilot reform programs of university-industry cooperation initiated by the Ministry of Education, 8 are comprehensive pilot reform programs of Hubei Province, 8 are branded programs of Hubei Province, 9 are selected programs of “Professional Training Scheme for Strategic Emerging (Backbone) Industries” of Hubei Province, and 1 is a selected program of “Pilot Program for Nurturing Outstanding Innovative Professionals” of Hubei Province. HBUT has 3 teaching teams that have reached the provincial level of competence. Its program of Civil Engineering has passed the professional assessment of undergraduate programs by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. Its program of Mechanical Design & Automation has obtained accreditation from the China Engineering Education Accreditation Association. HBUT has built 2 state-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 key provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers; 10 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 3 state-level university student practice centers (off campus), 3 provincial standard-setting centers for internship and practical training, 2 provincial centers for internship and practical training, 9 provincial university student innovation centers, 3 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching demonstration centers and 1 provincial professionals education center for outsourcing services. In addition, HBUT has 3 state-level “Boutique Video Open Courses”, 5 provincial “Boutique Video Open Courses”, 8 “Boutique Resource Sharing Courses” as well as 21 Hubei Boutique Courses.
